Ireland is one of the first places God made. Known for its verdant fields, hospitable people and a deep spirituality dating from pre-Christian times.
County Kerry is the most western part of Ireland. It has wonderful scenery, land that has been sculpted by sea and weather. Let nature welcome you to Dolphin Spirits overlooking the magnificence of Inch Strand.

The location allows participants to be close to nature in all her glory. My goal is to provide you with the space to connect with your inner self, to tune into your body which always speaks the truth.

Using Breathing, Mindfulness practices and Walking Meditation we will be outdoors encouraging and deepening the connection between Spirit, Mind and Body. The techniques you will learn are applicable to all areas of your life whether at work or home.

The retreat center is a peaceful place and we will have time for rest and reflection. It is close to ancient megalithic sites and relics of monastic Ireland. The proprietors Eve and Michael have longstanding experience hosting retreat groups and will facilitate the overall experience.
The nearby town of Dingle has fine dining, Irish music and a thriving cultural scene, which we will sample on the Friday of our gathering.
We will meet from: Tuesday evening August 21st to Saturday August 25th midmorning.

Lios Dana is comfortable, with large reception rooms and 8 bedrooms on the second floors, 2 double rooms with ensuite bathrooms, 2 single rooms with ensuite bathrooms and 4 rooms multiple occupancy rooms sharing bathrooms.

Anne Hennessy moved from Ireland over 30 years ago to Canada where she trained in psychiatry and has over 25 years of clinical experience.
Her special interest is in treating people in later life, using eclectic approaches. It is clear that issues of mid to late life distress us. Anne likens it to an adolescent reworking of longings and emotions. We don’t have a clear road map to guide us as we navigate the many changes required of us as we age. In seeking answers we need to emancipate ourselves from attachment to intellectual solutions and Anne believes that tuning into ones inner wisdom and truth is a good beginning.
In the busy word there is little peace from the clamour of obligations and responsibilities. Retreats have a time honoured tradition allowing participants to rest and listen to themselves.
Mindfulness meditation has been invaluable in helping many cope with seeming insoluble issues such as chronic pain, depression and stress.
Anne is trained in the practice and teaching of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction by Drs Kabat-Zinn, Santorelli, and their colleagues having recently
completed the 9 Day intensive training program though the University of Massachusetts.
She values attending retreats herself, and has co-conducted annual retreats for psychiatrists attending the meeting of the Ontario Psychiatric Association.

Imbolc (pronounced Imolk)

Since the time of the industrial revolution, our celebrations marking the points on the ever turning wheel of the year have faltered, and even died in many cases. This has been at the expense of community. Marking the seasons as a community is a much needed way to continually weave the threads of connection into a beautiful tapestry, ever changing and growing as does the land and the community itself. Ever honoring each and every part of the community, and our connection to the land and it’s other inhabitants. We can thank the Goddess that there is a resurgence in these sacred ceremonies and festivals which we both remember and cocreate, and a returning understanding of their importance .

As with all the points on the Celtic wheel, it is not known whether it was a true preChristian festival, or a folk custom tending to elements of this time of year in the agrarian calendar. It is clear, however, that it combined with the Catholic calendar into a syncretized celebration, the essence of which varied through time and location.

Further north the festivals marking the coming of the light were the forerunners of Candlemass, incorporating the honoring of Mother Mary. In Ireland, where there was a history of feasting and attending to the lactating herds, honoring of the Goddess Brigid easily shifted to honoring the Catholic Saint Brigid. Even today, there is an eternal fire kept in her name at her supposed birthplace in Kildare.

Once Christianized, these festivals became subject to the tides of political change. The laws denouncing certain rites, and promoting others, were polarized by the tension between Catholic and Protestant rulers and rulings, and the practices, except in outlying districts, depended on who was in power at the time.

No matter what the true origins of Imbolc was, no matter whether Saint Brigid was a historical person or a mythological depiction of the Goddess, this was always a time to recognize the beginning of spring in Britain and Gaul. To honor fertility and the nourishing lactation of the mother. To honor women.

Ronald Hutton in his book “The Stations of the Sun” when speaking of Candlemass customs in Whales wrote:
“As in the Gaelic areas where Brigid was welcomed, a feast at the opening of spring had developed into a means … of paying respect to womanhood.”

It is at this time that the herds are moved from their winter fields, which are then readied for planting, by now well manured. Although there may well be some difficult and frosty times ahead, the light is growing and preparation begun. Now is the time to celebrate the ending of the winter season, and to herald in the spring.

All of you mothers out there will remember the time when in labor, the time when you come to the end of your rope, when you hit transition. It is during transition that, although you feel you simply cannot go on – you know simultaneously that it is almost over. Your precious gift is soon to emerge.

For although this is a time of bleak tiredness, it is also a time of great hope and anticipation.

Such is Imbolc. The coming of the light, and of the milk.

The start of spring.

Light candles and dedicate them to your mother,
and to The Mother.
Come together in community.
Feast and make mary merry.
And allow the hope and light of grace rekindle your fire and passion
as we walk into spring
together.

INTRODUCTION:

Traditional Thai massage, or “ Ancient Massage “, can look back at a long history of therapeutic healing.
The legendary founder of the art is believed to have been a doctor from northern India.
Known as Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, he was a close friend of Buddha and personal physician to the Magdha King Bimbisara over 2500 years ago. He is respected and honoured by many Thais as the “Father of Medicine“ and regarded not as the inspiration for the massage techniques used in Thailand today but also as the source of knowledge about the healing powers of herbs and minerals.

The theoretical foundation of Thai massage is based on the concept of invisible energy lines running through the body. This energy lines form a sort of ’second skin’ , a second body in addition to the physical body called Pranamaya Kosha or ‘energy body’, this second body is comprised of maltitude of energy lines, said to be 72,000 and out of this multitude thai massage has selected 10 mainlines on which there are especially important acupressure points.

Massaging these points makes it possible to treat certain diseases or to relieve pain. These points can be thought of as ‘windows’ into the body. These ‘windows’ enable an exchange of cosmic energy through which the human body is maintained in an energy balance with the energy of the universe.

The giving of the massage was understood to be a physical application of Metta , the Pali word used in Theravada Buddhism to denote ‘loving kindness’. Thai yoga massage involves also a lot of stretching and many exercises might be described as a ‘applied Hatha Yoga’.

THE COURSE DESCRIPTION

A practical and theoretical training in traditional thai yoga massage is suitable either for people who wish to learn a healing art to practise on friends or family, those who already working as yoga teachers, dancers, actors, gym instructors, physiotherapists, massage practitioners, nutritionist, nurses, midwifes or beginners who would like to start a new career in bodywork.

The course consist of 12 lessons (72 training hours). Each day of training begins with morning lecture and demonstration and afternoon supervised practise. After completing the course, the student will be asked to practise 30 full body massages and to return for a final practical examination as well as a short theory test.

About Kasia

Kasia’s exploration into healing began in the late 1980s.
At that time she was living with her parents in Poland.

As the physics teachers they worked closely with well know scientists, healers a

nd traditional doctors who were investigating the power the human body had to self heal.

Greatly inspired by her parents work, Kasia decided to deepen her own studies into bodywork and food as medicine .

In the early 90s she went to the ‘International Macrobiotic Institute’ where she studied with world renowned macrobiotic teachers and counsellors such as Michio Kushi, Denny Waxman, Bill Tara and Jon Sandifer.

Here she learned the art of being able to read the human body, how to prepare healing foods, compresses and plasters, how to prepare natural medicinal teas and drinks. Kasia also mastered the technique of applying acupressure massage to help stimulate the flow of blood and energy throughout the body.

Since becoming a qualified counsellor she has given countless consultations and also accepted many invitations to give lectures in Poland, Belgium, England and Spain.

Always eager to learn more, Kasia’s interest in bodywork led her to complete a 3 year course in Shiatsu Training at the’ British School of Shiatsu Do’. She then went on to take a number of postgraduate courses in Pregnancy Shiatsu with Suzanne Yates, Barefoot Shiatsu with Shuizuko Yamamoto, Hara Shiatsu with Ohashi and Shintai with Saul Goodman.

Fascinated by oriental bodywork and the power of stretching and deep breathing, she went to northern Thailand to study traditional ‘Thai Yoga Massage’ and then to southern India to train in the ashrams and become a ‘Yoga’ teacher.

With her endless passion for bodywork and her natural desire to help heal others … her work has led her from popular London yoga studios and massage clinics, to the world of entertainment and helping a whole host of celebrities including Matt Damon, Sting and John Cusack.

Together with her much loved husband Jamie, they have developed a unique ‘Macrobiotic Yoga’ health program which they hav

e been teaching in ‘Spas and Retreat Centres’ across Europe.

Kasia is also a teacher of ‘Seated Acupressure’ and ‘Thai Massage’ and gives classes in Eastern Europe and Asia.

About Jamie

Jamie began his macrobiotic journey in 1986 when he was advised by a family friend to try this healthier lifestyle in order to improve his bronchitic condition.

Within a year he succeeded, via good macrobiotic practice, to cure his ailment.

In 1988 he trained at the East West Restaurant (London’s only dedicated macrobiotic restaurant at that time).

Here he gathered experience in all aspects of macrobiotic cooking. Since that time he has continuously expanded his interest in macrobiotics, pursuing a deeper understanding of the order of the universe and its practical applications, especially in the area of human health and consciousness.

Since then till now he has been cooking around the world. Jamie has cooked at yoga retreats, summer camps, exhibitions and is constantly being asked to teach and give macrobiotic cooking classes.

He has cooked many times in Ireland, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Poland and the USA.

In 1998 Jamie founded a Macrobiotic resource website called the “Macrobiotic Guide”(www.macrobiotics.com), that has helped to transform thousands of people’s lives.

In this holiday retreat led by an experienced facilitator and pioneer in his field who has been running workshops in Ireland since 1992,

poet, psychotherapist and healer Jay Ramsay is offering a space for you to open to your own inner richness of being through poetry and creative writing alongside your own personal development.

Using a series of tried and tested writing exercises (which will include an inner shamanic journey) designed to spark and unravel your own expression,

you will be working through imagination and feeling, on your own and with each other, and also in the natural environment of this expansive beachside setting.

The silver thread of water that led us here,

Along the edge of this peninsula

Become this vast sheet

Of white-cresting breakers,

Silver-grey as we gaze down

_________________________________onto the sea

And at the mountains beyond it,

Lit briefly in sun…

As you speak of that school of dolphins

Suddenly erupting there

Leaping, splashing and circling

Out of the water—

As I glimpse them invisibly

__________________in the light of their colour

And this vast sky opens

__________________________under the rugged reach of land

And the wide, three mile bow of the sand

Fronts the hummocks of dunes

Embroidered in green…

Like a giant semi-colon

Where the sea of the Self begins:

__Ocean, reaching in, wave after wave

In the liquid hiss of its breaking whisper

Samhuin

First of the Four Celtic Fire Festivals

The Celtic Wheel begins at sunset Oct 30 with Samhuin,

the first of the four fire festivals,

and traditionally lasts three days and nights.

The harvest is in , and it is a time of beginning decay.

In the northern hemisphere, the cold winds come and the fields turn fallow.

Farmers assess the livestock and decide who to slaughter,

and who might last the winter months.

There is plenty, but preparations are underway for the austerity of winter.

This is also a time to honor the dead.

Those who died in the previous year in particular,

and all the ancestors.

A time to feast,

remembering to feed those who walked the Earth before you.
The veil is thin,

and this is a time when you are most able

to connect with

your loved ones on the other side,

known and unknown,

and send them gratitude.

You may need assistance from them,

and asking for them to help you gives them great pleasure

as they are invested in the successes of their descendants on Earth.

These “Days of the Dead” also serve to remind us that there is more than what meets the eye,

and that there is life after life.

There is a natural tension between that which we want to leave behind,

and that which we we want to bring forth and manifest in the coming year.

Choose carefully, so that in these days of deep magic your heart’s desire will be called to you,

and your fears will fall away.

Celebrate and make merry for the Beginning of a New Year.

In this program we return to the Amazonian lowlands that were so dear to our brother, Ipupiara Makunaiman, Bernardo Peixoto, PhD, revisiting his beloved people and restoring the school for the children of Fatima. During the trip we will hold a memorial ceremony to invoke his memory and spirit to the land he loved.

Jenny “Claicha” Zamora is an anthropologist, herbalist, Shamanic Healer and native of Peru. She is a teacher, researcher of traditional herbal medicine and conducts fieldwork with the indigenous people of South America. She also assists in the development of environmental programs and trips to the Amazon.

Eve Bruce, MD lives in County Kerry, Ireland. For the past decade she has dedicated herself to changing the paradigm of our relationship to our Mother Earth, to our Body-Temple and to each other. She facilitates trips to learn from indigenous elders South America and Africa and Vision Quests to Walk the Bones of our Ancestors in Ireland. Brought up in Kenya, she holds a special love for the wisdom and energies of the continent from which humanity was born. Author of “Shaman MD” (Destiny Books) and “Shamanism:The Book of Journeys” (O-Books), she is also a surgeon who works with Doctors without Borders, a Shamanic Healer, a Past Life and Between Life Regressionist.

Rob Murphy is a practicing shaman and is attuned as a master shamanic-reiki practitioner and Level 3 reiki practitioner. He has been initiated as a yatchak (shaman) into the Quichuan Path of Light tradition in by Don Esteban Tamayo in Ecuador and a shaman in the Green Path Medicine tradition of shamanism taught by the late Brazilian shaman, Ipupiara and his wife Claicha, a yatchak in the Peruvian Quechua tradition, and Dr Eve Bruce. Rob was also initiated into the Brazilian shamanic tradition of the Makunaiman (one who makes others dreams come true). Rob is the founder of the Richmond Shamanic Meetup and Drum Circle. He gives workshops and classes in shamanism for the Richmond, Virginia and NYC areas. As a graduate of Dr Linda Backman’s Past Life Soul Regression and Between Life Soul Regression programs, he regularly uses the power of regression therapy as an integral part of his shamanic healing.

This program is offered to anyone who already has a basic understanding of holistic notions or alternative therapies and is ready and eager to deepen their knowledge of traditional ancient energetic forms of healing arts and to spend their days nurturing their awareness in the natural environment. • Six ethnic groups live in close proximity in this area of the Amazon jungle, allowing a rare opportunity to learn and experience ancient, powerful healing techniques and herbal lore.
• Taruma Sanctuary is the perfect place to begin our journey. It is an interesting detour from the routine of pre-packaged travel plans. After spending time there, we will travel through the pristine tropical jungles along the Rio Negro River, visit local native communities, admire the river banks, and explore ancient caves, waterfalls and national parks.

• Practicing ancient and mystical healing arts from the rainforest tradition using local medicinal and aromatic plants and natural tools.
• Basic concepts of health and healing used in local areas by native herbalists and teachers. Creative expressions and reflections during our journey:

Come for an intensive weekend or join us for the fun filled full week.

“If you can say it, you can play it” … These are the famous
words of Jaqui’s first drum teacher, Babatunde Olatunji, and also the foundation for all of her drum classes. The Drum For Joy in Ireland program will include classes where you will learn the language of the drum, basic technique and how to make your drum sing. Jaqui presents the drum songs in a way that make it fun and easy to learn. You will learn many rhythms, breaks, solo techniques and vocal parts throughout the program. We will also be exploring improvisation with with drums and percussion instruments, found sounds and working with the rhythms of nature in the beautiful environment around us. We will celebrate the coming of autumn, go to local pubs to hear Irish music and create spontaneous music magic together! No musical experience necessary/ all levels are welcome. There are a limited number of drums by request … please bring a drum if you can.

Spring, 2012 ~ Drum For Joy! Weekend Intensive -
$450 (Euro 300) ~ Begins 7:30pm Friday and ends after lunch Sunday ~ Full room and board included.

Weeklong Workshop ~
$1500 (Euro 1000) ~ Begins 7:30pm Friday and ends after lunch Friday. Room included, full weekend board (same as above, *half board during the week (breakfast and lunch) included until lunch Friday.

*The reason for half board during the week is so that we are available to go to the local pubs to have dinner and listen to music… We will also have the opportunity to make some community dinners together in the large Lios Dana kitchen. All part of the fun and adventure!

Jaqui MacMillan found her passion for African drumming in the early 1980’s. Over a span of thirteen years, she studied with many Masters, including Babatunde Olatunji, Mamady Keita, Sam Turner, Carlos Moore and Mahiri Fadjimba Keita at the Tam Tam Mandingue School in Washington, D.C. Having performed and recorded with some of the top names in
the business, she began sharing her joy of drumming with others by teaching classes and facilitating community drum circles. Jaqui has taught privately and given workshops throughout the USA for over seventeen years through her program, Drum For Joy!™. The Washington Area Music Association, (WAMA), awarded Jaqui the “World Music Instrumentalist Award” every year from 1995 through 2002 and she was featured in the Women Drummers 2000 issue of DRUM! Magazine. In 1999
and 2001, she attended the Drum Circle Facilitators Playshop and the Facilitators Mentor Training in Hawaii with Arthur Hull. Jaqui has facilitated drum circles for hundreds of conferences, corporate team building events, elementary and high schools, hospitals, programs for “at risk” children, juvenile detention centers and programs
for homeless and battered women. She is a founding board member of the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild (DCFG), an organization dedicated to professionalism in the field of drum circle facilitation. As an endorsee of Mountain Rythym Percussion, Jaqui represented the company as a guest facilitator at Summer NAMM in Nashville, TN, at the Percussive Arts Society
International Conference, (PASIC), in Ohio and as a workshop leader at the Seattle World Rhythm Festival. She is currently creating a drum program for children, which includes her own line of drums and percussion instruments and she is the director of The Drum For Joy!™ Orchestra.
